What is Work-Life Balance, Anyway?

The importance of work-life balance and tips to help achieve it.

Tips for juggling your daily grind and me time.

We all know that smartphones help get everything done from the comfort of wherever you are. But how do you find a healthy work-life balance? Here are some work-life balance tips for staying productive while avoiding burn-out.

Thrive App for achieving work-life balance

GET THE APP
1. Let apps be your gatekeepers
Nothing can stop your boss from sending emails or texts around the clock, but you can change how you react to them—or don’t. There are apps that specialize in blocking alerts from certain contacts during your “me time”. Apps like THRIVE and OFFTIME let you set specific days and times that are guarded against work notifications while keeping a checklist for you to tackle first thing Monday morning.

“Our days are being occupied by things that don’t matter most of the time.” - Jason Fried, Founder of Basecamp

Increase your production at the office
2. Make office time work time
This might seem like a no-brainer but it’s good to reevaluate how productive you are at the office. “Our days are being occupied by things that don’t matter most of the time,” says Jason Fried, author of The New York Times best-seller “Rework” and founder of Basecamp. “We’re just talking. There’s a big difference between constant conversations and meetings and actually getting work done.” If you’re more focused and productive during regular office hours, then you’ll be more likely to protect that much-needed downtime.
Set a routine or playlist to help get you in the right state of mind.
TIP: Technology isn’t the only answer: keep essential oils like eucalyptus at your desk and breathe in for mental clarity and focus.

3. Routines help set the mood
Every left-brained person just perked up at this headline, but this still applies to all the creative types too. Think of routines as setting the mood for your creative outputs—a way to trick your body and mind that it’s officially “work time” so the ingenuity can begin. Whether that routine is getting in early and grabbing your favourite coffee or lighting a candle at home and listening to your favourite chill playlist, seduce yourself into a more productive mentality when the time calls for it.

Use calendars and reminders to keep your schedule always up-to-date.
4. Your schedule is your best friend
Admitting that technology is addictive is the first step to recovery. Next, establish a clear work schedule and reasonable guidelines for when you should be expected to be available outside of the office. As any therapist would advise, boundaries are healthy and ultimately you want to be part of an organization that respects your boundaries as much as you respect theirs.

Do bigger things

With the Galaxy Note9, you can multitask to get more done with easier note-taking, Multi-Window and the S Pen.

5 Simple Time-Saving Tips

5 Simple Time-Saving Tips

Work smarter, not harder for the free time you deserve.

With 24 hours in the day and an ever-growing to-do list, effective time management can be your saving grace. But how do you get it all done without losing your mind? Here are a few simple tips on how to work smart so you can enjoy some time to yourself.

Take back control of your time with the Thrive app.

1. Less media, more socializing
We all instinctively pick up our phones and check social media without even noticing. So much time is dedicated to emails, cat videos and everything in between. Time-saving apps like THRIVE will help you take back control of your time without the distraction and temptation of checking your phone so you can focus on what matters most. Watch the video to see how it works.

Strategize your to-do list to be more time-efficient
TIP: Write everything down first to get it all out, then circle the most time-urgent tasks and work from there.

2. Prioritize your to-do list
We get it: your to-do list is getting longer by the second and there’s simply not enough time in the day to get it all done. A little strategy can go a long way. Do any of your tasks sync up with each other? Can any be done at the same time? What absolutely must be done today vs. tomorrow? Prioritizing your tasks will go a long way towards knocking them out more efficiently.
Keep a timer going for tasks

3. Set timers to stay on track
Some tasks don’t have a definitive end, so for more abstract to-dos like “tidy up the living room,” try setting a timer. Need to study up for that quiz or presentation? Set your clock for how long you want to dedicate to that task. Once time’s up, move on to the next. This is also a great mental trick to keep you honest and on task.

Make sure to keep your personal time

4. Respect your “me time”
Now it’s time to pencil in a little time for the true VIP: yourself. Scheduling your me time (and sticking to it) is a necessary step in self-care and helps avoid potential burn-out. This doesn’t mean taking a trip to an exotic destination every few weeks but simply blocking off time in your calendar for the small but personal things like at-home facial or starting that book you’ve put off. Give yourself the same attention you apply to work, errands and your family.

Keeping to your routine can bring structure and balance
5. Keep your routine, keep your sanity
Routines help give your life more meaning and balance. No matter how creative you may be, your brain craves a little structure. So trust the process and stick to the methods that help get the job done while saving a little time for yourself too.

Tackle all of your tasks

The Galaxy Note9 will help you feel good about crossing off your to-dos, while Bixby makes it easy to set reminders with simple commands.

Here's what's new with Galaxy Note9

These days, whether we’re connecting with friends and family, leading a conference call on the go, snapping photos, or playing a favourite mobile game, we rely on our smartphones for almost everything we do.

Combining fan-favourite Note features with an all-day battery, a Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) connected S Pen and Samsung Electronics’ most intelligent camera yet, the Galaxy Note9 raises the bar for smartphone performance and power with innovations that help users get the most out of work, play and everything in between.

A Signature Design

The Galaxy Note9’s 6.4-inch Infinity Display is the largest the series has ever seen, with plenty of room to enjoy a favourite movie or game, or write, draw or play with the connected S Pen. The device’s Die-cut metal frame looks sleek and slim and features an interplay of glossy and non-glossy finishes that exudes a premium look. The Galaxy Note9 is available in a selection of four standout colour options: Midnight Black, Metallic Copper, Ocean Blue and Lavender Purple.

A Mobile Remote Control
The Galaxy Note9’s enhanced S Pen introduces entirely new ways for users to manage their device and express their creativity.

The addition of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology has transformed the S Pen into a convenient and customizable remote control that allows you to easily manage apps and functions, including the camera, from within 10 meters of the Galaxy Note9. The PENUP-powered Live Drawing and Photo Drawing features, meanwhile, offer users simple tools to create dynamic works of art that showcase their artistic skills.

In addition to functioning as an intuitive remote control, the Galaxy Note9’s S Pen also includes support for Samsung DeX, Samsung’s powerful productivity solution. Users who connect the Galaxy Note9 to a screen via Samsung DeX will be able to utilize the S Pen to streamline a wide array of tasks, such as delivering presentations.

An Intelligent Camera

To make capturing the perfect picture as simple as possible, the Galaxy Note9 enhances Samsung’s industry-leading camera technologies with deep-learning capabilities that make it easy to snap stunning shots.

The camera’s new Flaw Detection and Scene Optimizer features utilize advanced AI to help users take the best possible picture. The former automatically notifies you of any flaws in your photos, such as blinking eyes so you can capture another shot, while the latter automatically analyzes objects, scenery and time elements in the camera’s frame in order to recognize the type of scene you’re photographing and optimize colour tones accordingly.

Premium Power and Performance

As teased before the Unpacked event, the Galaxy Note9 offers users the very best in terms of battery life, speed and storage.

The Galaxy Note9’s all-day, 4,000mAh battery is Samsung’s most powerful and reliable yet, and the device’s 128GB of baseline storage offers more than enough room for all of your photos, videos and apps. An industry leading cooling system provides optimal performance during graphics-intensive activities like gaming, while a 10-nanometer processor and support for mobile carriers’ fastest network speeds ensure that you’re never stuck in the slow lane when downloading or streaming your favourite content.

Even More Dynamic with Samsung DeX

Samsung’s powerful productivity solution, Samsung DeX, becomes even more versatile when paired with the Galaxy Note9. The new, easy-to-carry HDMI Adaptor makes utilizing Samsung DeX even more convenient, creating more opportunities to enjoy a PC-like experience at the office, at home or on the go. The solution’s dual-screen support allows users to work simultaneously on the Galaxy Note9 and on a connected display, and lets you utilize the phone as a touch keyboard, a touchpad, or a surface for drawing with the enhanced S Pen.
